Hadestown 2023
Hadestown is a 14-time Tony-nominated musical written by Anäis Mitchell and directed by Rachel Chavkin. It won eight of the fourteen Tonys it was nominated for. It also opened to critical acclaim from fans and media critics alike. It broadly follows the myths of Orpheus and Eurydice (the young lovers) and Hades and Persephone (the older lovers). In Hadestown: the Myth. The Musical, you cannot tell one way or the other whether or not you are in the 1930s American dust bowl, an Appalachian mining town, or a fantastical but terrifying post-apocalyptic Greek mythology-inhabited world. “Don’t ask where, brother, don’t ask when…” Hermes sings in our ‘prologue’ of sorts, Road to Hell. I have seen Hadestown twice now and I have seldom come across such a beautiful, wonderful, self-aware and politically aware show. We raise our cups to them!
