How far I’ve come

Me!
Me!
Happy birthday to me!
Me!

Advocate, Poet, Quaintrelle, these are just a few words I’ve often prescribed myself as identities, labels if you will. But I’m also biracial (South Asian) genderqueer (they/them), bi, and more. As of July 15th, 2023 I turned 20 years old.

What is a label? Well, the Oxford dictionary defines it as a classifying label or name given to something to put in a set category. The thing is, it isn’t always so. At least as a queer person I give myself words to describe myself the best way I can and hope it’s comprehensible to others. But really, few people like being small minded and limited in their ideas or notions of themselves.

I wasn’t always so confident. Amongst other things I’ve done this year I finished a book draft, started on a novella and rediscovered my love for history. People are complicated, I think we do ourselves a disservice in letting people be simplistic. Everything is a spectrum and I mean, quite literally, everything. We should expect better of ourselves and our peers but to jump on some ‘canceling’ train upon a mistake is merely absurd. Additionally, context matters.

I began by talking about labels. For the sake of consistency let us consider community, the fact it does in fact take a village and language is often subjective and varies from person to person. “To define is to limit.” — Oscar Wilde
